The cruciate ligaments of the knee consist of two structures: the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). When viewed from the side, they cross each other to form an “X” shape within the knee joint. A cruciate ligament tear typically occurs during a sudden twisting or rotational movement of the knee, especially when the foot is firmly planted on the ground and the body continues to move.
